2008 is a joint project of: The Outdoor Experience Fund & CAMP LA JUNTA sponsored in large part by Kerrville's Board of Realtors |
DreamKamp
2008:
Opens Sunday, August 3 at 4:00 pm
Closes Friday, August 8 at 5:00 pm
DreamKamp was founded in 1997 by the Young Men's Business League. In 2006, The Outdoor Experience Fund a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization started in 1990 for the purpose of developing innovative outdoor programs for deserving children, took over sponsorship. DreamKamp developed as a way for Camp La Junta working with area business leaders and non-profits to support successful area children with a free, yet exciting camp program.
Here's what the
Kerrville Daily Times Editorial Staff had to say about DreamKamp:
"A group of over 100 exceptional kids who demonstrated a positive attitude and leadership potential are being rewarded this week. The children from Kerrville, Hunt and Ingram are participating in DreamKamp, which is sponsored by the Young Men’s Business League of the Hill Country. The process for selection is not based on grades or extracurricular performance, but reaches out to those sixth and seventh graders who have that special spark that sometimes can go unrecognized. YMBL gives these children, who are full of potential and hope, the chance to do out-of-the-ordinary activities during their summer. At Camp La Junta, they take part in horse riding, scuba diving, archery, boating and a host of other camp activities. The youth are offered spots to attend simply because a teacher, counselor or other school official noticed that spark and, with Camp La Junta and The Board of Realtor's help, reached out to that child and honored them. What a remarkable program!"
DreamKamp is a major project each year. It's purpose is to send area youth to a week of youth camp at one of the Hill Country's fine, traditional camps. Camp La Junta caught the vision and agreed to be the inaugural host youth camp for the 1998 camp season. After the first year, Camp La Junta agreed to host DreamKamp indefinitely. In 2006, Kerrville's Board of Realtors captured the vision and began to provide financial support to DreamKamp, helping to ensure that over 100 kids each year are able to participate.
DreamKamp 2008 will again be a one week, coed, Christian festival of sport, splash and spirit. A full week of standard camp activities, including, horseback, canoeing, riflery, swimming, SCUBA, canoeing, kayaking, high ropes, archery, sports, water games and sailing are scheduled. A strong counselor staff representing some of La Junta's finest activity instructors, and young adults from Our Lady of the Hills Catholic High School and Our Lady of the Lake University serve to instruct and lead campers in these activities as well as daily spiritual lessons and evening programs. Nightly there are community leaders, such as coaches, business people and government officials who speak to DreamKampers about the role which their faith has played in their success. The goals of the program are entertainment, adventure, excitement, spiritual growth and leadership development.
DreamKamp 2008 will run from Sunday, August 3 through Friday, August 8. The goal is always to send as many children to camp as possible. For the summer of 2008, Camp La Junta and the Outdoor Experience Fund set a goal of over 100 campers, and they've successfully surpassed that number. They feel strongly that no deserving children should be left out do to lack of funding.
